The new generation Ford Focus that just made its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January will have a high-performance variant according to statements Ford’s group vice president of product development Derrick Kuzak made this week. The new Ford Focus that will be available next year is all new from the ground up and will be identical around the globe.
Ford has not built a high performance version of the Focus for the US market since the SVT Focus bowed out of production inf 2004. Since then the car has taken on a more milk-toast dowdy persona, not at all appealing to most serious performance enthusiasts. Meanwhile the European versions have been setting the world afire with high powered RS and ST models to die for.
The new Ford Focus high-performance variant is said to use a version of the new global 2.0 liter Eco-Boost turbo-charged and inter-cooled 4-cylinder engine. The engine would likely be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or Ford’s new direct shift 6-speed gearbox.
The version of the Eco-Boost 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that will power the 2011 Ford Edge is is estimated to produce around 240hp. Whether the Ford Focus high performance application will be the same tune as Ford’s other cars in the US is unknown. But it would make sense to dial it up a notch to compete with cars like the Subaru Imprezza WRX and Mazda Speed 3, both of which are closer to the 300hp mark.
To handle all that power, all wheel drive would be a prerequisite. Ford has not revealed any detail yet as to the specifications for the new Ford Focus high performance variant. Jim Farley, Ford group vice president of global marketing, stated that Ford would reveal the model’s specifications in the next few months.
Hopefully Ford will see the value in resurrecting the SVT badge. Bringing back an SVT Ford Focus into showrooms would strike a chord with the Ford enthusiasts who have been waiting long for such a car. In any case the new Ford Focus will be built in Wayne, Michigan and is about a year away.
