In six short weeks, international automotive journalist Sue Mead, the first American female Driver of Record in the Dakar Rally, will join professional off-road racer Darren Skilton, also of the U.S., as the duo share driving and navigational duties.
The 6,000-mile-long route will take them from the Atlantic-coastal town of Buenos Aires, Argentina, along a course that twice crosses the high peaks of the Andes before heading north along the Pacific Ocean to the Chilean town of Africa near the Peruvian border.
If Mead and Skilton are successful in reaching Arica, they will face six stages in Chile, including multiple special sections through one of the harshest environments on the planet, the Atacama Desert. They’ll then turn the Raptor’s wheels east for the remaining 3,000 miles, completing the epic race in Buenos Aries, Argentina on January 16.
